New year, new decade, new sound
The other week I realized an awesome thing was coming with the new year. For the last decade every year has been pronounced two thousand and one,and two thousand and two. For some reason the old 1900 pronunciations of “aught one” and “aught two” never caught on. This is kind of strange for a society that is blindingly quick to chop syllables, abbreviate, and whittle down words and phrases into initials only.
After tonight it all changes again. From here on out we get to call the new year “twenty-ten” and “twenty-eleven”. A whole new sound for a whole new decade. It has been ten years since we had a new years eve that did that for us. Think of all the time we will save by losing those two extra syllables. Company productivity will go up and the economy will rebound.
